Norwegian Buhund Breeders

Our kennel name is Hundehaven. It was selected because of our horse farm which is named Hestehaven.  Hestehaven means "The Horse Garden" and Hundehaven means "The Dog Garden". The language is Norwegian.

Below are questions taken from the AKC web site. This is where AKC educated the puppy buyers to ask these questions. We have answered them for you here so you can get to know who we are.

1. How long have you been breeding?
We have been breeding Norwegian Buhunds since 2007. As a child, Catherine had helped her parents with litters of dogs.

2. Are you a member of an AKC Parent Club or any other dog-related club?
Yes, we are members of the Norwegian Buhund Club of America. Catherine is a past officer of the club. She finished two terms as treasurer and decided not to run for office so that she can spend more time with the dogs.

3. Describe the breed's characteristics?
The Norwegian Buhund is a typical spitz dog, slightly below medium size. The Buhund is squarely built and has a dense, flat-lying coat. The ears are pointed and erect and their shape and size should harmonize with the head shape. The tail is carried firmly curled over the back. The Buhund is either wheaten or black. The wheaten variant can range from rather light to yellowish-red, with or without dark-tipped hairs.Clean and bright color is preferred. The black variant should preferably be self-coloured, but white as a blaze, chest spot or collar and on the paws is acceptable. Eyes should be as dark as possible and harmonize with the overall appearance.

4. What is this breed's temperament like?

The Norwegian Buhunds have the typical spitz characteristics of activity, self-confidence and independence, but are trainable and home-loving with less inclination to hunt than other spitz breeds, having been bred as herding dogs rather than as hunters and draft dogs. They are alert watch dogs but not prone to senseless barking. Affectionate and intelligent, they are excellent family companions, good with children. Buhunds want lots of playtime with their owners.

5. How big will the dog get?
Normal size is 43 to 47 cm for males and 41-45 cm for bitches. Weight is in proportion to heights. With that said about 25 to 35 pounds.

6. How much exercise does the dog need?
The Norwegian Buhund is a high energy dog. They need a walk at least twice a day. If you are a hiker or runner, the Buhund would love to go with you. We train ours to the treadmill.

7. Does this breed bark a lot?

Yes, this breed is a barking breed.

8. Does this breed shed?
Yes, they are a double coated dog that blows coat twice a year.

9. How often will the dog need to be groomed?
Indoor dogs can be groomed once a week. Outdoor dogs, we run a brush over them daily to be sure no stickers get in the coat. When the Buhund is blowing coat, we recommend daily brushing.

10. What are the best training methods for this dog?
We recommend starting out with the AKC Puppy Star Program and going on to the AKC CGC Canine Good Citizens program and then to classes. Please go to our page on LINKS and see more about these programs.

11. How old will he be before he acts like an adult dog?
6- 8 months is an approximate age when they will settle down a bit.

12. Does this breed do well with children?
Yes, many Norwegian Buhunds are with great families. Go to our shared photo pages to see some happy families.

13. Does this breed do well with other pets?
Yes, this breed does well with cats other dogs and people. It is all in the training and the socialization of the individual dog. Go to our shared photo pages to see the different Norwegian Buhund friends.

14. Do you do health screenings prior to breeding a litter?
Yes! We have CERT on all our dogs and we do OFA or PennHIP tests on all dogs we breed. We have DNA tested our breeding dogs and have given results to CHIC (Canine Health Information Center)
.
15. Do you show your dogs at AKC events?
Yes, we do conformation shows and many of our Buhunds are AKC Champions and AKC Grand Champions.

Our Breeding Plans and thoughts...

We are very serious breeders and not a puppy mill. We show our dogs and we sell the puppies to other serious owners that take very good care of their puppies. We only breed each bitch once a year for a maximum of 5-6 litters the full life time of the bitch. We do not breed until after the age old two years old and all health exams a done. The bitch / dog must have clear eyes and hips that passing scores. The must not be any genetic faults or conditions that would be passed on to the next generation.

We test
1) Eyes
2) Hips
3)Attitude
4) Herding attitude
5) For any genetic faults
6 ) Last but not least... Conformation must be at the top of the standard.

We will not breeding any Buhund that has faults. We would rather breed a GREAT individual more than the recommended amount, than to breed an average Buhund once.

All of our breeding is done under the supervision of Dr. Tammy Eichmann, DVM.

The right Buhunds will become a AKC Champion and Grand Champion under our breed program.  We admit not all of our puppies will be show dogs. We will screen each litter. Pets will go to pet homes with limited registrations. All breeding possible puppies will be co-owned until 2 years old and all health tests are done and the individual has passed them. All breeding puppies must pass the health exams and show until they receive their AKC or respective CH before we will release the co-ownership.

We have outdoor kennels and we have a dog room for crating at night when weather does not permit outdoor living. We have our Buhunds come in and be family with us after dinner and before bedtime.  (movie time or just doggy time) They get walked daily and/ or get to be loose on the farm with us while we are driving the ATV around. (the most favorite doggy activity)  They get toys to chew and games to play. We are developing a doggy playground and hope to have it up in the near future.

We screen our potential buyers and keep communications with all our puppy owners. We sell with a contract for immediate ownership back if for any reason the new owner cannot care for the puppy.

We hope to establish good working relations with all Buhund breeder around the world.

One day we hope to go to Crufts. We have two of our Buhunds that have been invited. (so far)

We take our job as Norwegian Buhund Breeders seriously. We are always looking for the BEST IN THE BREED to breed to and to purchase for our breed program.

If you are a Norwegian Buhunds Breeders and you feel our standards meet yours, then let's talk and make beautiful Buhunds together... We are always interested in talking with Buhund breeders world wide to create the best we can. To develop a wide variety of blood lines and to maintain the standards of the motherland.
